We were featured instructors in the Fall 2007 PNCA CE catalog.
Here’s the interview:
How long have you been teaching at PNCA?
We’re new here, our first class was in Fall 07. In addition to co-teaching we also have a design studio called Study Partner.
What is your fondest memory of working on an art project:
Shawn: I once found two metal gaskets in my favorite abandoned park on the bay in San Francisco. One was shaped as an M the other as
an R. Later I drew inspiration from them to design a typeface, which
I used in an announcement of a Furniture Scholarship at California College of the Arts.
Jen: When I was younger I put out a zine. I would stay up all night photocopying typefaces out of old type foundry photo-lettering books and using a waxer to paste up my layouts by hand. It was so exhilarating to put something I had created out in the world. I enjoyed it so much that I decided to study graphic design.
From where do you draw your artistic inspiration?
Designing for causes that have a positive impact on the community is always the best inspiration. We try to select our clients on the that their story is something that we feel strongly inspired by, and the artistic direction comes naturally. We view each new project as an opportunity to study a subject in depth and make a positive contribution
through design.
In the past year we have helped to promote cycling, organic farming, visual arts, holistic bodycare & music. The opportunity to be involved in so many different facets of our community is what inspires us the most.
Any projects in the works?
We are currently working to rebrand an organic farm in Santa Cruz, CA. The project includes everything from renaming to logo development, packaging, website, and community education posters about local
organic produce.
